Van Zylsrus is no ordinary hotel. It is an experience. Quirky and characterful do not do it justice. Petro Jonker s genius for design has brought the desert inside, the wildlife motifs a constant reminder of the unique situation. Visiting the Kalahari? Dont miss this essential, bucket list tick.

Eclectic hotel with lots of charm and friendly hosts In the middle of nowhere after a bumpy drive on dirt road one arrives at this little gem. Greeted by the friendly staff you feel at home immediately. Rooms are comfortable and clean & service is good, people could not go more out of their way to help us. A visit to the nearby Meerkat Manor is a must if you are there on a Saturday night and up early the Sunday, an amazing experience.

A pure gem We have stayed in 5 and 6 star hotels around the world, but the Van Zylsrus hotel is at the top of our list of the best hotel. Quite an achievement, if you take into account that it is not easy to get here. It is absolutely amazing accommodation with a homely feel and all the comforts one would not expect in this arid, but beautiful part of South Africa. The honeymoon unit is a real treat to stay in. The food is fantastically, tastefully, authentic South African and cannot be found anywhere else that I know of. Make a detour on your travels to spend some time here, including the meerkat research project visit to your itinerary.

What an oasis-gem in the remotely Kalahari town of Van Zylsrus. We where pleasantly surprised with this Artistic Hotel. Cleverly designed seating areas in the garden and around the courtyard gives this hotel a real cozy feel - theres also a small corrigated dam in the garden! Each room is decorated in its own style, artisticly placed pebbles and mosaic works ad a touch of art and colour (Good quality clean white linnen & towels) - each on suite bathroom different from the other (some double basins others bath & shower - our room also had a private courtyard with a seating area & an outdoor shower surrounded with plants - awesome!!) Manager & staff the best! Food - awesome!! Hotel-dogs (2) - reallly add the homely welcome feel. Locals very friendly...we came as travellers, but left as locals!

What an amazing stop-over on our journey from Gauteng to the Kgalagadi...absolutely LoVed it!! Highly re-commendable!! Friendly owners & helpful staff, amazing decor, lovely quaint country type restaurant, cute little curio shop....everything about this place is just amazing!!! We were gob-smacked!! Rooms are well appointed with a very clean and well equipped bathroom. The beds are just so comfy, and we woke up feeling really well rested. We stayed in a lovely family room called Meerkat Meander. The food was tasty...real plain country style cuisine! It is prepared on site, by people who obviously know how to cook good wholesome food!!

Surrounded by S.A.Kalahari desert scrub, behind a plain, dusty shopfront, lies this lovely little inn! It was started by a shopowner who decided to offer accommodation to travellers on their way to Botswana and is still popular with local farmers who often stop in for a drink at the bar. Decorated with quirky desert creatures in iron and mosaics and painted in earthy colours, you feel like you are entering a fairyland. We were warmly welcomed by Marina and Willem who were always on hand to offer info and cater to our needs. We had the lovely honeymoon suite, the teens shared the "Bugs Life" unit and my brother had the "Dainty Delights" room. Each room has a theme with innovative decorations on walls and bathroom ware. The beds are comfortable with luxury linen. There are international plugs, air-con, heaters and wi-fi (charged). The pool area is grassed and private. The property has a restaurant with simple home-cooked food. On the second night, we cooked for ourselves and were provided with all utensils, tablecloth, wood and iced water at the outside BBQ area - we were amazed at the personalisel service offered here! We visited a nearby farm and saw rare antelopes and did the meerkat project visit which was pure magic. Unfortunatly we arrived too late to do the sunset quad bike tour. All activities were well organised for us. The inn was clean and the bathroom amenities were of a good standard. It took us 4hrs from Upington on tar roads - plan the route before you arrive at the airport as it is tricky and you could end up on gravel roads! Willem will give you directions. It took us 1hr 30 on a fairly easy gravel road (R31)via Askam to reach the main road (R360) to Kgalagadi Park - it is a further 52km to the park entrance gate. Our tip: there is a fuel station in town that is open on Sundays. Room Tip: Honeymoon suite is the pick with a lovely bathroom. Bugs Life unit has the spare bed in the lounge.

The intricate artwork everywhere in the hotel and beautifully decorated rooms are outstanding features of this hotel. Add customer focused staff that will go out of their way to assist you to this formula and our visit became a truly memorable experience. The menu lists a couple specialist local dishes and overall the food was excellent. It is advisable to check with the Hotel beforehand on the current quality of the dirt road before embarking on your journey. Our visit to the Kalahari Meerkat Project was a once in a life-time experience and we will forever be fans of Jub-Jub Bird – the leader of one of the meerkat colonies.

Safe parking at back of the hotel close to the swimming pool. There is also a restaurant and bar.     The Van Zylsrus Hotel is a must-do on anyone's Kalahari Bucket List. Its off-the-wall decor and sense of humour just add to the lustre of this far-flung country establishment. Back in 1989, my spies inform me, the tiny Kalahari hamlet of Van Zylsrus was given its first traffic stop sign. Too right – Van Zylsrus is so far away from anything, it might well be closer to the Sahara... ‘You should have seen the fuss they made about it,’ say my informants. ‘It was hot news all over the bar at the Van Zylsrus Hotel.’ Me, I’ve always wanted to visit this place. It’s on my bucket list of 20 things to do and see in the Kalahari before I kick the proverbial bucket myself. Gimme a cold one, it’s been a long ride in the old Isuzu saddle. So here I am, keen as mustard. I know about traffic signs and stuff because I come from Cradock where, my other spies tell me, we once had a set of traffic lights. But, due to general lack of interest (and, I suspect, a certain degree of non-compliance), they took our traffic lights away. And everything slumped back into a state of polite country chaos. It’s a hot day, and the sign at the entrance to the town says: ‘Relax, this is Van Zylsrus.’ The hotel is the last word in quirky country decor You should see this hotel, which has been completely rebuilt. Nothing of its former status as a 2-star dive remains. You could wander about the premises for days and never be bored. There’s an arty little folly here, a creative little niche there, with eccentricities abounding. It’s a 4-star boutique in the desert; but more importantly, it’s a desert hotel with complete attitude – and full-on artfulness. Inlaid patterns, galvanised steel buckets, water fountains and meerkats – of course meerkats – hand-crafted mirrors, basins, interesting toilet seats and a bar that comes as close to Mardi Gras as the Kalahari ever will, with shiny lights and signs and stuff. Gimme a cold one, it’s been a long ride in the old Isuzu saddle. The owner buys his stuff from auctions, or has them made by a genius crafter from Zimbabwe. He knows the value of having a drinking hole with a good back story. And so, to everyone’s delight, he’s busy building that legend – on a daily basis. Like it's Christmas – the hotel bar with its twinkly lights Check out the guinea-fowl walls VAN ZYLSRUS HOTEL, KALAHARI

It is so nice to come across a hotel as fun and vibrant as this one. Every wall is covered in some sort of bright cheerful artful and it is a real treat for the eyes. Not only that, but each room is themed –we had the tortoise room. Everything had tortoises on it and it was such a sweet touch. The hotel restaurant served up some nice quality food and we enjoyed sitting out in the peaceful garden surrounded by butterflies. It was also so great to see water being recycled throughout the hotel. Shower water was being used to water the garden and there were 3 great pumps filtering the water through from various parts of the hotel.
